Bushwalking
Victoria is a fantastic place to hike, given the abundance of tracks and trails throughout the state.
Walk to the capital
If you’re a hardcore hiker, try the Australian Alps walking track, an overland trek that begins in the old mining town of Walhalla and ends near Canberra 650 kilometres away. The track runs through blissfully under-exploited plains, forests, woodlands and a handful of historic cattlemen’s huts.
Shorter steps
Shorter treks cut through the Grampians, the Bogong High Plains in High Country, and Wilsons Promontory in Gippsland. If you just fancy a bit of exercise without weeks of advance training, there are also plenty of sedate tracks winding lazily through loads of greenery in the Yarra Valley, Dandenongs and The Ranges.
Where to stay and what it costs
Parking and campsites are usually available near a park’s entrance, and you may be asked to donate a few coins to assist with track maintenance.
Precautions
Before setting out, be sure to familiarise yourself with local weather conditions and plan to bring plenty of provisions. You can also pick up maps, tips and information on local wilderness paths from official visitor centres. Finally, consider lodging a travel plan of your route and its length with the park ranger.
